Barcelona faced off with Atletico Madrid at the Wanda Metropolitano on Sunday in what was the game of the weekend in the Spanish League. Both teams needed a win for different reasons with Atletico Madrid currently out of the Champions League spots and Barcelona looking to stay in touch with rivals Real Madrid at the top of the log.
Atletico Madrid began brightest with the players buoyed on by the vociferous home fans as they looked to score an early goal. Hermoso saw a cross deflected by Junior Firpo which beat Marc Ter-Stegen in goal but was saved by the posts.
Hermoso would later have a golden chance some minutes after with Portuguese wonderkid Joao Felix floating a cross into the box. Hermoso got on to the end of the ball with a clean strike which was saved at point-blank range from Marc Ter-Stegen.
Atletico would later come close with Alvaro Morata nodding straight at Ter-Stegen from a cornerkick. Barcelona eventually got into the game with Gerard Pique coming close with an excellent header which hit the bar.
The Second half would start in similar fashion with both teams having a go at each other. However, with five minutes left on the clock, Barcelona would get the breakthrough. Lionel Messi took a pass from Frenkie de Jong before making a one-two pass with Suarez and sublimely slotted home beyond the reach of Jan Oblak.
Victory takes Barcelona top of the log on goal difference ahead of rivals Real Madrid with the Classico on the horizon.
