Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi has won his sixth Balon d’ Or award in a glamorous ceremony held last night by L’Equipe. The Argentine beat the challenge of Dutch star Virgil Van Dirk and long-time rival Cristiano Ronaldo to win his first award since 2015.
Lionel Messi had been the bookies favourite after a stellar year in which he won the League for Barcelona and scored 54 goals in all competitions. He was also able to win the European Golden Boot for the sixth time and was the top scorer in the UEFA Champions League.
Virgil Van Dirk came second after leading Liverpool to the Champions League and has been the major catalyst for the transformation of the club. Van Dirk is widely considered the best defender in the world and has been stellar for both country and club in 2019.
Cristiano Ronaldo finished third after a good season with Juventus leading the Italian team to yet another Serie A title last campaign.
However, the night belonged to the Little Argentine from Rosario who sits atop the record standing with six Balon D’Or. Last year winner Luka Modric was on hand to present the award to Messi in what was a significant moment. This represents another milestone in the Argentine’s illustrious career.
