Arsenal are in talks with Real Madrid over a new deal for Dani Ceballos. Mundo Deportivo says Gunners boss Mikel Arteta is desperate to keep hold of the Spanish midfielder this summer thanks to his strong showing after the restart.
The 24-year-old spent the 2019-20 season on loan at Arsenal from Real Madrid and did well, becoming a regular starter under Mikel Arteta in the second half of the campaign. Ceballos has settled into a good partnership with Granit Xhaka when the Premier League came back from coronavirus lockdown.
The Spain international made 36 appearances in all competitions, scoring two goals, and started in the FA Cup final triumph over Chelsea at Wembley this month.
Game time with the La Liga champions is likely to be extremely limited for Ceballos next season and he is happy to return to Arsenal where he is a much more integral part of the squad.
However, Arsenal have made a “downward” proposal, refusing to pay more for his transfer than they did last time. Additionally, the Gunners only wanted to pay half his salary, something Madrid president Florentino Perez has rejected.
However, Mundo Deportivo adds that Ceballos “waits” for Betis, where he developed as a youth player. Betis themselves would be keen to land Ceballos on another deal, having sold him to Madrid in 2017.
Ceballos’ loan from Real has now come to an end and he is expected to report back for duty at the Spanish capital ahead of the new LaLiga season.
Real are not expected to keep Ceballos due to their overwhelming options in his position, but Arsenal do not have enough funds for a permanent deal. Instead, they are hopeful of persuading Real to let Ceballos enjoy a second season at the Emirates, reports The Sun.
