Chelsea manager Frank Lampard is prioritizing the signing of a centre-back this transfer window. The Blues have already strengthened upfront and on the wings with the signing of Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech and are expected to add Bayern Leverkusen’s Kai Havertz to a new-look squad but Lampard knows he needs defensive reinforcement.
According to Football Insider, Jose Gimenez from Atletico Madrid is Lampard’s primary target and though he has a release clause of £110 million, Lampard is hoping to get him for significantly less.
He wants him to help shore up the Blues’ leaky defence, which was their biggest weakness this season.
The Uruguayan is highly rated, though he has struggled with injury this season. Chelsea have rotated Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen, Kurt Zouma and Fisayo Tomori, Gimenez would slot seamlessly into centre-back.
Declan Rice is another player Chelsea is interested in, but West Ham United would love to keep him till at least next season unless they get a staggering offer such as £80 million.
Gimenez is an Uruguay international and has a £110 million release clause but the blues hope to get him for £60 million.
Barcelona’s Marc Andre Ter Stegen and Leicester’s Ben Chilwell are also potential recruitment for the Blues.
