Manchester City produced the perfect response against Chelsea, bouncing back from last round defeat to Liverpool.
Kante put Chelsea ahead before goals from Kelvin De Bruyne and Mahrez stopped the champions from going 12 points behind League leaders, Liverpool.
Chelsea were the better side in the early stage of the game, and they opened the scoring through N’golo Kante in the 21st minute. He latched on to a pass from Kovacic, held off the challenge from Mendy, before finally squeezing a finish past Ederson.
City won’t be behind for long though, Kelvin De Bruyne scored against his old club through a deflection off Zouma.
However a moment of brilliance from Riyadh Mahrez put City ahead just before half time. The Algerian winger collected the ball and skipped away from Kovacic and Emerson and fired a shot through the legs of Tomori before beating Kepa.
The chances kept coming for the two sides but no one could add to the tally. The result marks the end of a six-game Premier League winning streak for Frank Lampard’s young side and for Manchester City, it was a perfect response in a match they can’t afford to lose.
Attention will now be on midweek’s Champions League, as City hosts Shakhtar Donetsk while Chelsea will be away against Valencia.
