Reports from England suggests that Manchester United defender Phil Jones rejected the offer of a testimonial when signing his new contract in February.
The Athletic, claims that United offered the 27-year-old the prospect of a testimonial by the club to celebrate his 10-year stay at the club in 2021.
According to the Athletic Jones claimed that due to his low popularity among the fans only his mother and father would turn up for the game. This is a new low for the defender who has endured an injury-ravaged time at Old Trafford.
Signed from Blackburn by Sir Alex Ferguson, Jones had the hallmarks of becoming a world-class defender. However continuous stints on the injury lists has largely seen him fail to fulfill his potential.
His latest performance in the 3-3 draw at Sheffield in which he made a mistake for Sheffield’s first goal drew mockery online. However, at just 27 years old he can still rediscover his mojo and become the player that he promised to be.
United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has high hopes in him with his decision to keep him in the summer and let Chris Smalling move to Roma.
It would be interesting to see how he will perform in the coming weeks after his latest return from injury.
